RAINEY MODISIE – From the Streets to Stability

News & Stories

Rainey Modisie grew up in what many would consider a good home. But like so many young men, the absence of a father left a deep void in his life. He looked to others to fill that gap, including a man he calls “Mr A”—someone who became a destructive influence.

By modelling his life after the wrong example, Rainey found himself on a painful path: drugs, dropping out of school, prison, and ultimately, homelessness.

A Love That Didn’t Give Up

Amid that brokenness, there was one person who didn’t give up on him—Nadine, his then-girlfriend. Though she had experienced her trauma and neglect, she found the strength to stand by Rainey. Even when he was banned from his mother’s home, Nadine brought him food every day while he lived on the street. The two got married in 2017, despite the weight of addiction still hanging over their relationship.

A Chance Encounter

While working on a farm, Rainey met Logan and Brendan, both graduates of the Change Makers Program. Brendan shared how Jesus Christ had transformed his life, but at the time, Rainey wasn’t interested in Bible studies—he just wanted a better job to care for his family.

Still, he joined the day program in July, arriving with just enough money for what would be his last two straws. He stopped using drugs during the 2-week program and initially thought he was ready to move on. But what surprised him—and ultimately changed him—was what happened during Bible study.

“That’s what held me. The Bible studies. And I’m so grateful. It changed my life.”

Looking Back with Gratitude

Rainey now sees God’s hand throughout his journey. When he walks past people living on the streets, he doesn’t feel shame—he feels compassion and perspective.

He knows where he’s been. And now, he’s committed to giving back.

A Life That Inspires Others

Rainey was awarded a Change Makers Honorary Jacket—a symbol of his transformation and leadership. His wife Nadine’s faithful support is a testimony to the strength of love, loyalty, and grace.

If you want to meet Rainey today, you’ll find him at the N1 Shell Garage—a man with a broad smile, a kind word, and a story worth hearing.

Rainey, we salute your courage and transformation. May God continue to lead you and Nadine as you walk forward in faith.
