Gershwin Muller – A Journey of Restoration and Responsibility

Background

Gershwin Muller was raised by both parents until the age of 11, when his father left the family, bringing instability into his life. He was then sent to live with his maternal grandmother in Cape Town. During his school years, he performed well academically and excelled in sport, particularly rugby. After completing school, he pursued studies in Information Technology. At the age of 23, he returned to Worcester. 

Substance Abuse and Criminal Involvement

Following the passing of his grandmother, Gershwin inherited money, which he unfortunately spent on drugs. His substance abuse escalated rapidly, leading to a destructive lifestyle. In his twenties, he became deeply involved in criminal activities, acting as a middleman between gang leaders and smugglers, and became well known within criminal circles. 

Family and Social Impact

Gershwin’s lifestyle placed severe strain on his family relationships. His aggressive behaviour and substance abuse led to broken relationships with his family, including a complete breakdown with his brother. The mother of his child denied him access to his son, and most of his family distanced themselves from him, leaving him isolated. He was desperate for help and approached Change Makers, where he was admitted to the program in 2023.

Intervention and Programme Journey

Initially, Gershwin struggled to adapt to the structure and discipline of the programme. He was often resistant and negatively influenced others. However, through consistent guidance, counselling, and a focus on accountability, structure, and spiritual growth, he began to change. The programme created space for him to confront the root causes of his behaviour and step away from crime and substance abuse. 

Current Progress

Today, Gershwin is actively rebuilding his life. He takes responsibility for his actions and is committed to living free from drugs and criminal activity. Significant restoration has taken place within his family. He now has regular contact with his son, and his relationship with his brother has been restored. Trust within his family has been rebuilt.

Through the support of Change Makers, Gershwin successfully applied to the Fire Department and is now employed as a firefighter. He continues to grow in his role and actively seeks opportunities for further development.
