AUBIN ALEXANDER’S STORY

FROM RAGS TO RICHES may be a cliché, but it is true of Aubin. The first day we met him in 2013, he lived in a small shack and looked dishevelled! Today he is one of our most honoured and respected leaders, humbly enjoying the riches of God’s grace as he walks in the plans and purposes that God has for him.

WHERE DID THINGS GO WRONG?

Aubin had a good upbringing. When he was 15 years old he started experimenting with drugs. He wanted to fit in and be part of the in-crowd. This meant he had to do things that had a negative impact on his life. “I started using drugs, and it high jacked all the plans I had for my life. Drugs destroyed my life!” Things went very wrong for Aubin.

PUSHED

He found himself in a place where no one wanted anything to do with him. His relationship with his parents broke down, as did all other strong foundational relationships. His lifestyle pushed him away from loved ones. “In my drugged state of mind, I always had the desire to be sober. I told myself over and over again that I was going to change. But at the end of the day I needed people to push me in that direction. Even though its not nice when one is shunned like that, today I am thankful that I found myself pushed and driven into a direction that would change my life.”

TURNING POINT

Aubin saw how friends changed when they joined Change Makers. The turning point for him was envisioning his one year old son, having to grow up with a drug addict as a father. After 16 years of drug addiction he realised his life was falling apart and he needed help. The day Aubin decided to turn to the Change Makers, the Lord seemed to open doors for him. He was immediately admitted to Toevlug Rehab Centre (without having to be on the long waiting list) before joining the residential program of Change Makers.

LEADERSHIP QUALITIES

We soon discovered that Aubin was a leader. He was honest about his struggles. He crossed every hurdle even though it was not easy. Gradually we saw how his endurance produced character, and hope emerged. Hope, not only for Aubin, but for numerous men who knew him and were caught in the same trap. One by one lives around him started changing because Aubin released a sense of hope.

BEACON OF HOPE

Aubin married the mother of his son the following year. As a couple they reach out to others, urging them to leave their old way of living and to make right choices. Ten years later, and Aubin is excelling as the House Manager at our facility for men in residential care. He is on our leadership team and also heads up our screen printing department. Aubin is a role model in his own family, he is also a role model and father figure to all graduates from the Change Maker program, and his impact extends to the local community.

AUBIN’S MESSAGE

“It is my privilege to share my story with young men who are trapped in the stronghold of drugs. I want to tell you, drugs will destroy you, but there is hope! God saved me. In Christ there is always hope.”
